Why Poodle mixes need more upkeep than most breeds, and how to plan around it
What Your Mix's Coat Really Needs
Poodle mixes are some of the most popular dogs in the country right now, and also some of the most misunderstood when it comes to coat care. That soft, fluffy look isn’t low maintenance. It actually takes more consistent professional care than most other breeds.
Here’s what’s actually happening with your dog’s coat, and why the grooming schedule and pricing look the way they do.
Why Doodle Coats Are So Different
A Doodle is a cross between a Poodle and another breed, usually a Golden Retriever, Labrador, or Bernese Mountain Dog. The Poodle side brings tight, low shedding curls. The other side brings a straighter, shedding coat. Which traits show up more depends on the individual dog, which is why no two Doodles groom exactly the same. The most common coat types we see in Miami are:
● Curly or wavy coats: closest to a purebred Poodle. Doesn’t shed much, but mats easily close to the skin if it isn’t brushed daily.
● Fleece coats: soft, loose waves common in Goldendoodles and Labradoodles. Mats fastest under the armpits, chest, and tail.
● Flat or straight coats: leans toward the non-Poodle parent. Sheds more, but still needs regular grooming to prevent buildup at the skin.
Most Doodles land somewhere between curly and fleece. Their coat also changes a lot between six and twelve months old, when the soft puppy coat sheds out and the adult coat comes in. That transition is when most owners see their first serious matting, so it’s worth extra attention during that window.
Small Mixes: Maltipoos, Yorkipoos, and Similar Breeds
Small Poodle mixes like Maltipoos, Yorkipoos, Cavapoos, and Shih Poos have their own challenge.
Mixing a Maltese or Yorkie’s fine coat with a Toy Poodle’s curl creates hair that’s soft, light, and prone to tangling fast, sometimes within a day or two. Because these dogs often wear collars, harnesses, or clothing, the areas behind the ears, around the neck, and under the arms tangle the quickest if brushing slips.
How Your Hairstyle Choice Sets Your Grooming Schedule
There’s no single grooming schedule that fits every Doodle. It depends on the length you want and how much brushing you’re realistically going to do at home. These coats trap loose hair inside the curls instead of shedding it onto your floor, so that hair has to come out somehow, either through brushing or through a grooming visit.
● Long, plush look (over 1 inch): grooming every 2 to 3 weeks, plus 30 minutes of brushing every day. Miss a day and mats start forming fast.
● Standard teddy bear trim: grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, plus 30 minutes of brushing every other day. This is the most common, balanced option.
● Low maintenance shave down: grooming every 8 to 10 weeks, plus 30 minutes of brushing 2 to 4 times a week for whatever length remains on the head and tail.

Start Them Young
Since Poodle mixes need grooming for life, the kindest thing you can do is start early, especially for this breed because they will need constant grooming and we want them to be comfortable with the new noises, smell, and surroundings.
